About a week or so ago, the news reported that there is a 50% high school dropout rate for inner city kids across America. I would be lying if I said that I was shocked, because the family structure has been in disarray for years. Negative situations such as alcoholic and abusive parents, sons in prison, daughters struggling to raise their children without the assistance from their children's fathers, nieces prostituting themselves to make ends meet, and nephews living on the street because of a drug problem they can't kick are destroying our families and our society.

There are so many negative issues facing the family unit today. Where are the family matriarchs and patriarchs of yesteryear? Are there role models in the family unit anymore? Where is the leadership in the family unit?

Instead of worrying about what is occurring outside the front door, families need to come together and function as a unit behind closed doors. Family members need to create a culture of success, much like organizations (Microsoft or Pepsi) do. Those within the family that have achieved success (which is facilitated by leadership development) should lead this endeavour as they should have a better understanding of what needs to be done to bring about a positive change in the family unit's thinking and behavior. It is up to these leaders within the family to teach their relatives how to effectively pursue and achieve their goals. Only through repeated success by others within the family unit can success become the dominant culture for current family members and future generations.

Just think about your family for a moment, there was at least one instance where some family member demonstrated leadership that you can model or use to inspire your greatness. No matter how dysfunctional your family may seem, there is usually at least one member that you can look to for inspiration and guidance. It may just take you a bit of digging to find him/her. If there is no current family member that has demonstrated leadership that inspires you, then you may have to look to the past, which is fine. It's worth the effort, so take a look.

What did you come up with? Was it your great grandmother and great grandfather who immigrated to a young America in search of a better life for their family, your father who worked tirelessly to turn a mom and pop business into a family empire, your aunt who overcame an abusive relationship to be the first in the family to earn a college degree and purchase her own home, or your cousin who beat his drug addiction and now speaks to at risk youth about the pitfalls of drug abuse that inspires you?

Family members such these have demonstrated their leadership through their triumphs. If they are still with us, it is their duty to pass on their leadership insights to family members that are willing to learn. If they are no longer with us, it is up to us to gather as much information about their life, struggles, and triumphs so that we can learn from their leadership and use that knowledge as inspiration for our own leadership development. In either case, the goal is to gain leadership insights and pass them on to other family members so that a culture of success can be created and instilled in all family members.

Some of you may pose the question-"Am I my brother's keeper?" Well, the simple answer to this question is, yes. However, this is not to say that we should overburden or destroy ourselves in an attempt to uplift family members that don't want to help themselves. Nevertheless, it is our responsibility to help create a culture of success emphasizing personal

leadership development for each and every family member. If we don't, who will? Furthermore, if we don't, some if not all of the negative situations that we discussed earlier may begin to destroy those that we hold dearest. Creating a culture of success based on leadership development will help to deter family members from underachieving, as the kind of thinking and behavior that fosters negative situations will not be supported.

Why is leadership development in the family unit essential for society? Leadership development in the family unit is essential for society because every family member has the possibility to be a major contributor or detractor to society. Society would much rather have contributors (leaders) than detractors. For example, Joe Kennedy Sr. (former matriarch) of the Kennedy clan used his ambition and personal leadership as tools to create a political dynasty that has had a tremendous influence on society. Rest assured, Mr. Kennedy had family in mind in every step along his pursuit of success, which is a major reason why the Kennedy family has been such a major contributor to society over the years. We have to ask ourselves-What role do we want our family to have in influencing society? In answering this question, we must first acknowledge that our family is influencing society negatively or positively whether it's our intention or not.

We need to become more aware of the power of the family unit. We need to infuse our families with leadership. We must accept that it is the family unit that has the power to keep our children in school. It is the family unit that has the power to keep its members off of drugs and alcohol. It is the family unit that has the power to nurture, encourage, and inspire one another to greatness. However, for all of this to occur, leaders within the family have to step up to the plate and begin creating the conditions for success. These leaders have to show the others how to lead.

On the 14th March 2008, the media and swarms of fans gathered to watch a 16-year-old boy from Minnesota called Chris Chike perform on stage. Although everything was in place for this monumental evening in rock and roll, on closer inspection there was something amiss. Unlike most debauched rock legends Chris had an intense, reserved concentration on his face and as opposed to hurling himself into the frenzied fans, he was staring intently at a large monitor.

The reason for this anomaly was that the young man was in fact not a musical genius but an introverted teenager who spent too much time on his game console; he was not performing music but playing a game called Guitar Hero. Chris was breaking the world record for highest score ever on a single track and the masses of attention illustrate how deeply embedded the game is in global culture. This article examines the cultural phenomenon and compares it to real guitar lessons.

Guitar hero works on the basis of the player using a imitation guitar plugged into a games console which displays images on the screen. The imitation guitar strongly resembles a Fisher Price infants toy and has six different coloured buttons on it. The images displayed on the TV show a representation of the coloured buttons running along a Musical Staff which ignite when they hit a certain point, then the player must hit the colour corresponding button on the control.

Many diehard fans of the game will defend to the death that it takes the musical talent to succeed; to which one might say, why not apply yourself to actual guitar lessons? There is however, something to be said in their defence. As there are similar skills used in musical note reading and transferring those images, be they symbol or colour orientated, into physical movement. The continual movement of the musical staff provides a challenging sight reading exercise.

The bad news for GH junkies is that this is where the thin musical relevance ends. Whatever guitar backing track you are using if you were to make the game accurate to real guitar tuition there would need to be 132 different coloured buttons. You would also have to press the buttons hard enough to make a sound and they would be the size of your fingertips, whilst negotiating your way around six picker knobs. Guitar lessons break this process down into manageable chunks.

So what can you do when looking to make the transition between the two forms? The best way is by guitar lessons or multi-media guitar tuition. These are gradual lessons from the basic chords all the way to advanced solos. It takes time, patience and commitment, which might explain why so many people are taking the easier option of simulation over guitar lessons.

The concern of the musical fraternity when it comes to GH is not so much with adults who play a bit when they get home from work, but with the youth who are satisfying their musical needs by simulating as opposed to creating. Guitar lessons and guitar tuition are so easy to arrange but still youngsters are reverting to their consoles as opposed to bonding with their instrument.

There is no real comparison in the musical value between a game console simulation and a guitar lesson although some skills are transferable. Hand-eye coordination is a feature of many video games however you would never consider a racing game a simulation of driving an F1 car. Guitar tuition is a valuable step in learning how to become a genuine rock legend and it is available in many forms, however Guitar Hero is not one of them.

This is a guide to aid you in overcoming the seemingly insurmountable gap in the difficulty settings of what was the highest selling video game of 2007 even though it was only released in October:  Guitar Hero III - Legends of Rock. It is well documented that this game has a number of very large jumps in the technical difficulty of the game. These are known as brick walls. The most obvious ones are between the main difficulty modes; Easy, Medium, Hard and Expert. There are however other gaps as well. They are easy to see when you compare say 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot' to 'Through The Fire and Flames' on basically any difficulty. There are simply are not enough songs in between these two extremes, the worst gap for me personally was between the later tracks on Medium difficulty and average ones on Hard.

The general gaps that I have seen people complain about are these:

The 7th and 8th tiers of tracks on every difficulty seem to be much harder than the rest; esp. 'Raining Blood' and other very fast tracks. In the later difficulties it is particular sections of these tracks that become a problem.

The jump between each difficulty setting, especially between medium and hard, I.E. 'Oh GOD NO what is that blue/orange thing on my screen?!'

Specific sections of certain tracks: Such as the start of 'Through the Fire and Flames' on expert, the fast solo in 'One' on hard and expert and the 'Running Triplets' on 'Knights of Cydonia' (DAM THEM ALL).

First of all, as I am sure you have heard before if you are looking for a guide such as this; I will mention that the only way to really get better at this game and progress through the harder modes is to practice, practice, practice. However, there is practice that can help you out and practice that can in fact hinder your progress and lead to bad habits such as never moving your fret hand (which can make the jump to hard mode nearly insurmountable (unless you have five fingers and a thumb)).

Let's start at the start. If you are having trouble with the very beginnings of easy mode, just practice the first few songs (Pat Benetar, etc) until you have gotten the hang of fretting and strumming and all the basic stuff; make sure you have run through the tutorial at least once (if you are playing on the Xbox360 you will get an achievement for it anyway so why not?). Once you have the general idea of how to play the game you might notice that certain tracks or small sections of tracks seem harder than the rest; get used to it, these are the tracks that will keep you up until 5:17am on a Saturday night shaking from all energy drinks that you have been pumping in to try to step up your reflexes. (Actually I think energy drinks help me play certain tracks sometimes but that's probably something to check with your doctor about).

Soon enough you'll be working your way up to the hardest tier of the easy setting. Easy is essentially just that; easy. If you have troubles with any particular track just practise it in the practise mode until you can maintain a decent notes-hit percentage. The main ones to watch for in easy are the battles. You might not be used to using star/battle power functions or playing in lefty flip mode (just one of the many battle attacks that can be used against you), the best practise for this is to play battles against other people (if you can find any).  One thing that I suggest you do not do is; play each note with the same finger every time. Once you get into this habit you may continue it into medium difficulty and if you get stuck enough with this style it will make the game very hard for you in hard mode as it is no longer possible after the notes start speeding up and there are five of them to play.

Once you've finished the easy campaign you'll be adding a whole extra note to the mix in the Medium setting. Medium is much faster than easy as well but by this time you'll be used to the game as a whole and you'll probably be having a lot of fun. Medium is for the most part, the main difficulty setting that most casual gamers and other random party goers will play the game at so get used to it as quickly as possible. Medium is essentially the 'meat and bones' of the game for quite a while. If you have any particular trouble my suggestion is, besides the normal practise mode stuff, to go back to easy mode and try to five-star the song on that difficulty. Once you can five star it on easy without thinking you should be able to at least pass it on medium. Sometimes it is best to just leave that track for a while, go try to high score or five/gold star some other track on a mildly challenging difficulty setting. Invite someone over for some co-op/pro face off or figure out some other way to get some general practice in that won't force you to smash your controller/TV/game system.
