How does Mario Kart Wii decide who wins when 2 players get the same number of points?

When i play Mario Kart Wii sometimes me and my girlfriend get the same number of points in 2-player mode but the game will put 1 of us 1st and the other 2nd - we cant work out what the game bases this on? Does anyone know?!!!
It would settle a healthy argument!

I am wondering this too. I think it may be who won the last race.
When you tie, the player who ends up getting first is the player who did the best in the last race. Me and my twin brother tie sometimes too.
It is the person who did better in the last race because the last race is often the hardest. so put everything into that last race!

This has happened to me before and we usually just laugh and decide to do the best 2 out of three.
