Personal fitness 2009: Trends, equipment, new directions – Part 2

The economic collapse will have a profound impact on every aspect of our lives in 2009, including personal fitness trends. It's safe to say that there will more emphasis on bottom lines and less on waist lines .This will lead more of us to try and get fit on the cheap.

Not a Good Year Some

While many of us will hold on to that gym membership card until they pry our lifeless fingers off it, lower discretionary income will affect some sectors. This will be a very tough time to be a personal trainer or own a workout facility. Downsizing, layoffs, and foreclosures will make most of us forgo the gym and try to work off those pounds and that anxiety at home or on the neighborhood jogging track. The national weight loss and nutrition companies will also be pinched.

Active Gaming Will Take Off

As people stay home, this "cocooning "will encourage a fitness trend that started a few years ago. Active Gaming, also called "exergaming," takes the incredible popularity of computer console and online gaming and combines it with aerobic exercise.

Some of the most popular products in the Active Gaming category include: Wii, GameBike and Dance Dance Revolution.

As usual, the kids were the first to discover just how cool these products are. Now mom, dad and even grandparents are getting in on the deal. What drives this popularity? In the every case the equipment is connected to a gaming system and this system will only operate with physical exertion from the player. Lots of families have the gaming consoles and adding the additional equipment is inexpensive.

The Wii console system (about $250) has become the leader in the active gaming category. The premise is simple. Sports scenes are flashed on the screen and the players of the game have small controllers to enable them to participate in the game. Baseball, golf, bowling and more sports are all a part of the Wii console.

In the case of GameBike (home version $350), the player is seated on a modified stationary bicycle which is plugged in to a Sony Playstation or Xbox gaming console. The bike has a patented steering mechanism that allows the player to steer through the "chase" game on the screen. Plus, the faster the player pedals, the faster his character on the screen goes.

Dance Dance Revolution (from $50 to $1,500) which started as an arcade game will gain even more popularity . This game is basically a 3 foot by 3 foot square with sensors on each square. Using DDR software games, the player is challenged to follow

Defending video games: How more active games are getting gamers off the sofa

The Nintendo Wii is amazing for people who need to get off of the couch. Yes, I am talking to the video game couch potatoes to get up and play the Wii. Trust me, that system is wicked awesome. Take example the Wii Sports that come with the Wii game system. My uncle got it and I played against him. Even though the graphics look nothing like real people, I felt as if I were in the game and almost ran around the room to get the tennis ball. I forgot the Wii avatar runs for me already. How embarrassing. Wii baseball is also great for exercising. Using the controller to throw a fast ball, curve ball, or whatever is great. Once again I played against my uncle. He couldn't swing past my fast ball. I hope the video game couch potatoes are still reading. I used to be one of them. When I discovered Nintendo Wii and DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) my couch potato video games were over. Even though I still get exercise outside, I still love to play Nintendo Wii and DDR whenever possible. Especially on rainy days. Come to think about it. I think I want to play right now.

Speculating on the future of video games

Video games can be a lot of fun. There is so much variety these days that there is truly something for everyone in the video game world. Over the past 10 ten years, video games have evolved so much. Remember Atari, with the paddle you moved back and forth to hit the ball? From black and white video games, to one of the newest systems, the Nintendo Wii, video games have changed so much.

The Nintendo Wii is one of the latest systems out on the market. It uses some of the latest technology in which you are able to feel like you are actually in the video game. Playing with the Wii remote and nun chuck, you can actually be one of the characters. It actually can become quite a workout in a sense it is like you are actually fighting, or racing, or whatever the game may be.

Wii like video games

Take the video game Dance Dance Revolution for example. This was one of the best video games ever made in my opinion. You hooked the dance mat up to your video game system and followed the on screen cues for your every move. They even had a workout mode to see at the end of each session how many calories you have burned. Now this was high tech!

I think that video games are going to be around to stay. With the Playstation 3 system, you actually have the capability to be able to browse the internet, check your email, and all sorts of things. You are able to be playing against someone across the world if you would like to. It doesn't even cost you a penny to do these things, you just need to have wireless internet in your home.

Video games are going to become more like virtual reality. Your moves are going to dictate what your characters on screen are doing. This is also going to make more family fun nights, in my opinion. More families are going to be sitting around the television and playing video games because there is more interaction for the whole family to see and do.

The only downfall to these new and upcoming systems is that they are going to be really expensive. They are really bad now, at the average of fifty dollars for one game. If you can afford the game systems, I would recommend renting the games and trying them before you purchase them. It can get really outrageous if you buy every one you are interested in.

You know how there's a Wii Dance Dance Revolution? That is, "DDR Hottest Party?" Well, anyways, my sister got DDR for X-mas. While trying it out, I found out that this pad actually works with virtual console games, except that it's hard to use. Still very cool, though. Merry christmas. :-3 Sorry 'bout the bathrobe...
