Video game reviews: Golden Axe: The Duel (Sega Saturn)

When I was a mere kid in elementary school, I would go to the video arcade. There was a certain video game in which I would play. That game was known as: "Golden Axe." Golden Axe was a 2D side-scrolling beat em' up and hack n' slash game that took place in some medieval fantasy world of goblins, zombies, trolls, elves, barbarians, Amazons, dwarves, dragons, phoenixes, and so forth. To me, Golden Axe was one of the most classic video games I have ever played.

Around 1994, there would be a game called "Golden Axe: The Duel." I was a bit skeptical at first. This is a 2D fighting game using Golden Axe characters. However, this takes place some time after the events of the original Golden Axe series. Except for the Death Adder and the Golden Axe all of the characters in Golden Axe: The Duel are brand new. Around two years later, Golden Axe: The Duel would be released to the Sega Saturn system. However, I would not be able to get it until about 2002. I won a copy of the game off of eBay. As I still have my Sega Saturn console, I still have my copy of Golden Axe: The Duel.

HBGD : video game review in comic strips

The following characters are: Kain Blade, Milan Flare, Gillius Rockhead, Zoma, Doc, Keel, Jamm, Panchos, Green, Death Adder, and the Golden Axe.

As for game play, Golden Axe: The Duel did play all right. In a sense, it tried to emulate that of Street Fighter. However, there were really not enough combos present in Golden Axe: The Duel. The capabilities to pull off many combos are something important to people who enjoy fighting games let alone 2D fighting games.

One could say that the creators of Golden Axe were trying to keep to its roots. In that respect, that was pretty much the case. In respects to game play as a fighting game, there is still a lot left desired. Still, Golden Axe played like a decent fighting game.

There is one dynamic I found interesting. Anybody familiar with Golden Axe should be able to understand this one dynamic. At the end of each stage, your characters wake up to these short midget people stealing your stuff. You can beat them up for food and potions. This plays a huge part to your super meter. During each fight, there are these people running back and forth. You can simply knock them down as they drop all sorts of blue potions.

If you have five potions, you can unleash a powerful super attack. This is quite different from the super meter concept present in the "Street Fighter Alpha" series. This dynamic allows you fill up your super meter at any given time.

The stages are designed like something out of the original "Street Fighter II." The game sprites look like something that would come out of the early fighting games from Capcom and SNK. Overall, Golden Axe: The Duel is still a pretty decent 2D fighting game I have come across.

Video game reviews: M.U.G.E.N (PC)

In today's economy, many people are struggling. That means we have to save our money and whatnot. That means we need to be conserving our cash for a rainy day. For video games, they can get pretty costly.

The next generation consoles such as the Nintendo Wii, the Microsoft Xbox 360, and the Sony Playstation 3 have been considered costly. However, the Nintendo Wii is the most popular and least expensive of the three next generation consoles. Unfortunately, it is hard to get a Nintendo Wii console. I tried getting one off of eBay. But, that proved to be extremely difficult. Anywhere I go, I see that it is hard to find a Nintendo Wii console.

Luckily, I still have my PC laptop computer. One of the things I have done was trick out my laptop to be a serious gaming machine.

While I do have a bunch of free mass-multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) titles, I also have a bunch of arcade game emulators: CPS3, MAME, Nebular, the SNES emulator, and the Sega Genesis emulator. Plus, there are a bunch of Japanese doujin soft games that I downloaded onto my laptop.

So far, that is somewhat not enough for me. But, these are excellent alternatives to dishing out some heavy cash for a game for one of those next generation consoles.

Back in 2003, I learned about this freeware PC fighting game called "M.U.G.E.N." Last year, I finally decided to check out M.U.G.E.N. For the most part, I was pretty impressed with it.

However, M.U.G.E.N is not necessarily a PC game. M.U.G.E.N is a very interesting 2D fighting game. But, it is not really a game that is ready to play. In a sense, it is a game that you have you have to customize and so forth. It is a game; yet, it is not really a game at the same time.

M.U.G.E.N is a freeware 2D fighting engine that you can download online. It is designed by Elecbyte and written in the C-type programming with the Allegro library. This is a game engine yet a video game at the same time. One of the most interesting things about M.U.G.E.N is that it is open source and very customizable. You can customize your M.U.G.E.N to your liking.

I can download 2D game sprites from a slew of different fighting games and so forth. As a fighting game fanatic, it is a dream come true.

From there, I can put them into my M.U.G.E.N character roster. It is highly unlikely that there is going to be some massive crossover fighting game in the near future. Until then, M.U.G.E.N will have to suffice. So far, M.U.G.E.N is

Get Into the Groove With Nintendo Wii

While many video games have turned today's youths into small couch potatoes: Nintendo Wii is looking to change all of that. Nintendo Wii, or simply called "Wii" by most people, is an interactive action-based video game you hook up to your television set.

The Wii has taken the U.S.A. by storm and has continuously sold out from any store it has been placed in. People will stand on line in rain, snow or any type of weather to get their hands on the Wii. The Wii sells on eBay for up to three times its selling price of about three hundred and fifty dollars.

When you purchase the Wii gaming console, you get a number of things. You receive the Wii sports disk with several popular sports to play either as a dual player, 4-players or just as an individual. You receive hardware such as the Wii console, remote, nonchuck, sensor bar, console stand and an AV cable.

Everything about the Wii is smartly designed. The Wii console is slim and sleek and will look attractive next to any television set. It is also discrete looking and not bulky or the type of gadget that will take up a lot of space in your living room or family room. The Wii remote control is very intuitive, with buttons being different sizes and also different shapes. You can easily understand just how it works as you are setting up your Wii to play games.

To play Wii you create your own Mii character to represent yourself in the games. This is very much like an avatar that you may have created at Internet websites. The Mii characters are attractive and friendly. While the Mii character will not look exactly like you, it is fun to see this character that looks similar to you interacting within the game or activity you are playing.

This summer Wii has come out with their latest creation: Wii Fit. The Wii Fit is an athletic game of sorts that teaches body sculpting, yoga and aerobics. You can take your BMI (body mass index) and also track your fitness levels. This is ideal for the person that wants to get in shape or who may want to lose some weight. The Wii Fit offers five different sports activities. The activities are easy enough for a beginner to start and will be enjoyable for the advanced exerciser.

The only challenge one could wonder about is if those that use the Wii Fit will get bored with the exercises just the way people get bored with an exercise DVD and they require some type of variety for stimulation. Perhaps Wii is already ahead of us in this respect and is planning even more athletic "games" to be added to Wii Fit.

The Wii is a very creative idea for a video game and certainly has both children and adults getting up off the couch to play with it. This fun game can burn several hundred calories an hour, just like regular exercise. With its popularity, it is clear that many adults and children are enjoying Wii very much and continue to use it far beyond its early popularity. Nintendo is known for bringing us many high-quality video games and the Wii is simply an ingenious answer to the American obesity crisis.

My friend and I both have Guitar hero 2, I have it for PS2 and he has it for Xbox 360. Is there anyway to convert my controller to the Xbox 360? I looked online on ebay and found a PS2 to USB converter, and since the nonwireless form of a xbox 360 controller is a USB port would that work? If not, are there any other ways for me to convert so we can both play on his Xbox 360? Thank you for reading and any input would be greatly appreciated.
