Video game reviews: Mirrors Edge
Mirrors Edge Game review:
The only problem nowadays with new games being released is hype. Every time a new game is coming out in weeks to follow there is loads of hype around it and that can ruin a game. Big time. Like every time a new Grand Theft Auto game comes out the whole world is screaming in anticipation for their next outing with the anti-hero based game style. But every time a new Grand Theft Auto game comes out there is much disappointment and it leaves many players feeling unsatisfied. This is much the same for many games such as Halo or a new Tomb Raider game, although not the previous one as much. My review is based on a game that did not have too much hype behind it and was not considered to be a must have before release. My review is split into different sections here is a brief example so it will be much easier to understand.
Game play:
Here I will talk about the game play of the game and what it feels like to play the actual game.
So on with the review. Mirrors Edge is a first person game that is set in the distant future. It has set a new precedent for how games should be made in the future with having no predecessor or any other game like it. It uses a whole new style of game play and does it very well. Unlike any other first person shooter, a first person shooter (FPS) is a type of game where the gun is shown in front of the player and not the players body, the player does not use guns as a means of killing the enemies instead the main character, Faith, uses her acrobatic skills to get from place to place and kill enemies. Although you have the option to take an enemies gun from him and use it against him but it's much more fun and easier to dodge the foe. The game has many mixed reviews in the world of gaming some scoring it very highly and some scoring it at average claiming that the game becomes boring fast as it is very repetitive and same old, same old. But let me tell you this is not the case people who say that are very narrow minded and are obviously not accustomed to change in the style of games they enjoy so much.
Sound:
The sound of the game is very graceful and enjoyable to listen to but you will find yourself for most of the game having nothing in the background apart from the faint noise of the wind or the chirp of some far off birds. You will find that most of the levels take place outside so there is no need for background music as you are jumping and running on the top of massive open buildings.
The most anticipated video games of 2008
Summer is just around the corner and kids will be out of school soon. What is there to do for fun? Video games! With gas prices on the rise, a great way to keep kids and adults of all ages busy this year is good old fashion video games. Let me tell you we have come a long way from Frogger and Pac-Man, and were not talking Ms. Pac-Man either. There are some great games out on the market today in many different formats. So what are the most anticipated games of the year for 2008?
The debut of Wii Sports got us up and moving last November. Nintendo continues to put the fun in exercise with their release of Wii Fit. It is not as much a video game as a workout, but just as exciting. This game is scheduled for US release on May 14, 2008.

Set to be released this summer is the fifth installment of the Namco Soul fighting series, Soul Calibur IV. This game will be available for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 systems. At last, the game will be available for competitive play online. Soul Calibur IV will feature five new characters: bonus characters Angol Fear and Scheherazade, Darth Vader, a guest character on the PlayStation 3 version, the guest character on the Xbox 360 version is Yoda; there is also a new character by the name of Hilde.
The go-kart style of racing in Mario Kart for Nintendo Wii is sure to please the young and young-at-heart alike. As of now, there have been seven installments of this game with the eighth coming this year.
How could we survive without more Grand Theft Auto? The series has not changed much in the past, but the look of its ninth title, GTA IV is quite refreshing. This will be the first in the series to feature the RAGE game engine like the one in Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis. The thieving begins on April 29, 2008, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
If you like Burnout Revenge, you are sure to love Burnout Paradise for PS3 and Xbox 360. The graphics are some of the best. This game is set in an open world with no waiting for loading times and no lobbies or game menus. One of the best features is the incorporation of the Gun N' Roses hit, Paradise City. The newest Burnout installment was released in January.
Bring on more Wii. In the third installment of the Super Smash Bros. series, for the first time, the game will feature third-party characters. Developed by Sora, Super Smash Bros. is a crossover fighting game that emphasizes on ring outs as opposed to knockouts. Brawl is the first to support battles online with
Video games reviews: Transformers: The Game (Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, PS3)
Video games reviews: Transformers: The Game (Wii)
From the block buster hit Transformers: The Movie, Activision brings Transformers: The Game to the Nintendo Wii, as well as other platforms. A war rages on earth between the Autobots and Decepticons, a battle between good and evil. Allowing you the gamer to decide which side you wish to fight for. Which ever side you swear your allegiance to you be put into essentially an open world. Where you can roam the surrounding area or accept mission objectives. Do not mistake Transformers version of a free roaming environment with the likes of Grand Theft Auto. Your progression through out the game is extremely linear. You will be assigned one new mission upon completion of the previous one. Although, most of the surrounding environment is interactive, allowing you pick and hurl items around. There is little satisfaction to be had with terrorizing the local inhabitants.
This all fails in comparison with the weak control system of the game. Transformers is a third person shooter using the analog stick on your nunchuck moves you bot around,
and the IR is used to aim. This is where most of my grumbling comes from in this game. Often, if an enemy is behind you it will take sometime before you will be able to turn a full 180 degrees and return fire. A major problem for a game brings plenty and fast action.
Transformers also proved to be a very shallow game. Missions eventually become boring and repetitive, shoot this blow up that. All without ever really changing how you have to play the game. A few things like bonus content or trying to find 100 energon cubes, provides a little more depth to the game. However, with the problems in controls and a lack luster story line, the same old recover the "Allspark" "protect the world" theme. I could only imagine why anyone would want to play this game other than to just beat it and be done with it.
Game Play Score: 6/10
Controls ruin what could have been a very enjoyable game. IR controls are very sluggish in responding to movement
Graphics Score: 7/10
The game looks pretty good in 480p with 16:9 wide-screen. Cinematic look great and the open worlds look pretty decent.
Audio Score: 6/10
Boring music from the movie and no use of the Wii Remote speaker makes the audio experience a dud.
Creativity/Innovation Score: 5/10
Transformers makes little use of the Wii controls. Waggle to throw a punch, point to shoot. both feel unresponsive and have been done better by other games.
Replay Value Score: 5/10
Bonus content, pictures and images of old transformers, does not make up for a lousy battles/missions that become boring and repetitive real fast.
Final Score: 5/10
A playable and passable game but I would not recommended it to anyone other than those die hard fans of the Transformers series.
Choosing a video game console – Part 2
The first issue you should consider when buying a video game system is what type of system you are looking for. In the past, there were only two options: console or portable. Today, the Nintendo Wii adds a third, more interactive, option. So you may want to have a small portable system that can be used in most situations such as the PSP and Nintendo DS, or you may be more interested in a system that is less versatile, but has many other advantages such as the Xbox 360, PS3, or Nintendo Wii.
Perhaps the most important consideration is that of the game selection that comes with each system. In years past, games like Grand Theft Auto and Halo have made the PS2 and Xbox respectively highly desirable options, while the GameCube had a somewhat more limited range of available games. With the unique nature of the Wii, it is yet to be seen whether this will continue to be an issue for Nintendo systems.
Graphics are a very important consideration as anyone who has watched the evolution of video games has seen first-hand. What was seen to be remarkable ten years ago is of terrible quality compared to what is available now. The question is what kind of quality you feel that you need. If the last system you owned was the Super Nintendo, moving up to the Nintendo 64 or PlayStation would be a major upgrade. However, if you are looking for the best graphics, look into the newest generation of games.
Another consideration that a buyer should think about involves the accessories and alternate uses that each console has. For example, in comparing the PS2 and the GameCube, while the GameCube is cheaper and arguably has better graphics, it cannot play DVDs or regular CDs - the PS2 can. Memory also comes into play. The Xbox has built-in memory, but the PS2 and GameCube require separate memory cards. Finally, what type of controller suits you? The Wii gains major points for uniqueness and potential, but you might want something more traditional, or because of space issues, the Wii remote may not be practical for you.
The concern that hangs over every decision that must be made is, of course, that of money. While the most attractive consoles may be the Wii and the PS3, they may be out of your price range. In that case, the GameCube, PS2, and Xbox are all fine lower-cost options. A new GameCube can be found for as low as $50 while the current PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii prices are all well over $200, with the PS3 as high as $600.
