If there is a problem with the Xbox360 The LEDs in the ring of light will flash in a particular pattern.
The pattern itself leads some insight to the problem. Certain patterns will lead to numbered error codes which will provide further insight to the problem. The numbered error codes are described below their corresponding LED code.
Sections 1, 2, 3, and 4 are flashing red - The AV cable cannot be detected
THINGS TO TRY
1. Make sure that the AV cable is correctly connected to the Xbox 360 console.
2. Disconnect the AV cable from the Xbox 360 console, and then reconnect the AV cable to the Xbox 360 console.
3. If the four flashing red lights continue to flash, try wiping the metal area of the AV pack with a dry cloth. The metal area is the end that plugs into the console. Wipe the metal area thoroughly, and then try the AV Pack again.
4. If the AV cable is correctly connected but the four red lights are still flashing, substitute a different AV cable if you have one available.
Sections 1, 3, and 4 are flashing red - General Hardware Failure
You are strongly advised to check the Secondary XBOX360 Error Code this will give you a more accurate idea of what is causing your RROD.
THINGS TO TRY
1. Try restarting the console.
2. If restarting the console does not resolve the behavior, follow these steps:
Turn the console off.
Unplug all the power and AV cables from the console.
Unplug the power cord from the wall socket.
Firmly reconnect all the cables.
Turn on the console.
3. If these steps do not resolve the behavior, turn the console off, remove the hard drive, and then turn on the console. If the 3x Red LED error light is no longer displayed, turn the console off, re-attach the hard drive, and then turn on the console.
4. Also examine the lights on the power supply. When you turn on the console, the power supply light should illuminate green even if the three lights on the RoL flash red.
Sections 1, and 3 are flashing red - Overheating
Alternatively Overheating can be caused by the console locking up or “freezing” after a set amount of time. Lockups that occur at a specific point in a game are generally problems with the game itself and not caused by overheating.
THINGS TO TRY
1. Let the Xbox 360 console cool.
Note You may have to wait several hours for the console to cool enough. Do not turn on the console when the console is hot.
2. Verify that the console has sufficient ventilation and that the fan is operating. For more information about ventilation, see the “More Information” section.
PREVENTION SUGGESTIONS
To try to prevent this problem, use the following precautions:
1. Do not block any ventilation openings on the Xbox 360 console.
2. Do not put the Xbox 360 console on a bed, on a sofa, or on any other soft surface that may block ventilation openings.
3. Do not put the Xbox 360 console in a confined space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, unless the space is well-ventilated.
4. Do not put the Xbox 360 console near any heat source, such as a radiator, a heat register, a stove, or an amplifier.
DO NOT EVER PUT YOUR CONSOLE IN THE FREEZER OR OUT IN COLD WEATHER
Some people think that doing this might help “fix” an overheating console, in fact doing so could cause even bigger problems. Electronic devices like your console are made to function at and around room temperature, extreme cold temperatures can often cause just as many problems as extreme warm temperatures (such as overheating). Also if the console is located in a dramatically cold area while running, the difference in temperature between the hot console and cold air can create condensation which in turn will short out your console making the situation far worse. Condensation will happen more quickly if your console is overheating due to the greater difference in temperature. In short… DON’T DO IT.
A more aggressive Solution to overheating is to improve the cooling system of the console. The best solution is to replace the thermal compound. If you attempt this you do so at your own risk. If you’re console is still under warranty it is recommended that you contact MS for a replacement before attempting to fix it yourself.

Connecting an Xbox 360 to your computer
Ok, so hooking up your Xbox 360 to your computer, first off you will have to consider whether or not you want it wired or wireless. In this article, I will cover both of them.
Some things you will need are:
1. An Xbox 360
2. A computer
3. A router
4. Some cables, or the wireless adapter for Xbox 360
5. Windows Service Pack 2
To connect your Xbox 360 via a wireless connection:
Step 1: Turn on all electronics involved; your router, computer, console and the television.
Step 2: Plug in your Xbox 360 Wireless adapter. (You should be connecting to the same router as your computer, just incase)
Step 3: On your Xbox 360 Console, find the network settings, find edit settings and go to the setting which starts with "Wireless Mode"
Step 4: Find your wireless network, you should know what it is called if you are the one who set it up. Enter your network password, it should be something similar to gibberish.
Step 5: You should now be connected to your home network!
To connect your Xbox 360 via a wired connection:
Step 1: Turn on all electronics involved; your router, computer, console and the television.
Step 2: Plug in your ethernet cable to your router and Xbox 360. (You should be connecting to the same router as your computer, just incase)
Step 3: You should now be connected to your computer.
Sharing your media:
There are many things you can do with this set up, one of the perks of having your computer and Xbox 360 console connected are sharing media, through Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center.
In Windows Media Player, go to the arrow below the Library Tab > Click on Media Sharing > In the box that just opened click "Share my Media" > In the list below, select your Xbox 360 Console and then select allow (If it is not there, wait a bit it should show up).
In order to play the music on your console, you will have to go to the music menu, when it opens up press the blue X button to change the device you are choosing music from. Select your computer's name in the menu. Find the music you want to play, and WHAZAM. You're now streaming music from your computer. You can do this with videos and pictures aswell. The same process applies to both pictures and videos, aslong as they are in your Windows Media Player Library!
Using your Xbox 360 as a Media Extender:
The Xbox 360 can be used as a Media Center Extender. This means that the program "Windows Media Center" can sync with your Xbox, and retain its functionality all the way to your couch. You can even use a remote control to operate it.
The first thing to do is start the Media Center set up on your Xbox 360. It will generate a key, once your PC is detected of course. You should now run to your computer, and type in the code your Xbox 360 has told you. Now press continue and complete the setup.
Once the setup is complete, you can chill out on your couch, and enjoy your Media on something comfortable with friends for a change!

Netflix subscribers, if you've got an Xbox 360 and a Windows Vista PC, you don't have to shell out $99 for Roku's Netflix Player box to get your Watch Instantly library on your TV screen—you already have everything you need. Step 1: Set Up Your Xbox as a Media Center Extender

Unless you're already using your Windows PC as a Media Center powerhouse and have a tuner card installed on your Windows machine, chances are you haven't had much reason to set up your Xbox as an extender. Microsoft already provides detailed instructions for setting up your 360 as a Media Center extender, so here's the nutshell version. Start up your Xbox 360, head to the Media blade, and select Media Center. Since you haven't already set up an extender, your Xbox will walk you through the setup process between your Xbox and your PC. The Xbox will generate an eight-digit code to authenticate the connection between the two. Then you need to fire up Media Center on your PC, go to Tasks -> Add Extender, and fill in the blanks in the setup wizard with your eight-digit code when prompted.

Now that your Xbox is set up as a bona fide Vista Media Center extender, you're ready to download and install the vmcNetflix plug-in. There's nothing to it, so just download the latest plug-in from the link and go through the installer.

Before you can stream Watch Instantly videos to your 360 extender, you need to make sure your PC is Watch Instantly-ready first. If you've already watched videos on this computer using Netflix's Watch Instantly feature, you can skip this step. If not, forge ahead.
Your PC needs to install a plug-in or two from Netflix to help deal with the DRM and such used to stream videos. Installing them is as simple as logging into your Netflix account using Internet Explorer, clicking the Watch Instantly tab, and then playing anything. You don't have to finish it, so just click Play on the first video you stumble across.
Netflix will prompt you to install their plug-in before the video starts, so just accept their prompts and install. When you're finished with the simple installation, you should be watching the video you just chose. Once you're there, you can stop the playback. Soon you'll be watching that through your Xbox, on your TV, from the comfort of your living room.
Step 4: Set Up vmcNetflix on Your Xbox 360

Once there, scroll down to the Online Media section and then move left to select the program library. You should see an entry for vmcNetflix. Fire it up.

Step 5: Enjoy!
That's all there is to it. You can now stream any Netflix Watch Instantly video directly to the TV in your living room using the Xbox 360 that's already there. The vmcNetflix plug-in has been in steady development for a few months now, but as the video above points out, the vmcNetflix plug-in can be a little slow and sometimes buggy. This comes in very handy because saving videos means you don't have to worry about downloads buffering, and video playback, fast-forwarding, and rewinding all work better. The downside is that saving videos is not part of the Watch Instantly terms of service.

3 Red Lights on Your XBox 360 – Don’t Try the Towel Fix

* Why shouldn't I try the towel fix?
Because it is only a temporary fix. Those who have tried the towel fix and got it to work have also reported that their XBox 360 was repaired for only a short while. In some cases it has a caused their XBox to work for a few weeks, but in most cases it has only worked for a day or two.
Also, the 3 red lights on your xBox 360 is an overheating error, think about it, how can wrapping a towel around your XBox 360, consequently covering all vents and causing your XBox to overheat even more be a permanent fix.
There is a potential for bringing the temperature inside your XBox to such a high degree that it can start a fire which could transfer to the towel and possibly your home.
* So what can I do?
1. Get in touch with Microsoft support and send it away for repair. The main drawback with this option is that it could cost you around $150 if your XBox is no longer covered by its warranty and it could take between 1 and 2 months to be repaired and returned to you.
2. Buy a new XBox 360. Some people with this error (especially if it is out of warranty) have simply decided to purchase a brand new to enable them to get back to gaming as quickly as possible. In some cases they have sold their faulty XBox 360 on eBay in order to cover some of the cost of their new purchase. Of course there is a potential for your XBox to either not sell or only sell for a few dollars.
3. Your third choice is to fix the XBox 360 red ring of death yourself. This is not as hard as you may think, there are many guides to fixing the Xbox 360 red ring of death which you can get for much less than the price of a new XBox 360 or the cost of sending it back for repair to Microsoft.
