Why are some steering wheels on Mario Kart Wii golden while playing online?

it is there rank how good they are im a golden wheel but ive seen someone as a star you no i was in a race and everyone had golden wheel so answer at bottom is wrong

i was golden steering wheel all afternoon. Played with different group, soneone else had it. Changed back this evening, I got it back – only ever one golden wheel.
No idea why I had it as I had the lowest overall score most of the time circa 4500. . . ??
edit: ACTUALLY SCRAP THAT !!!
WAS PLAYING AGAIN WITH 3 OF 12 HAVING GOLDEN WHEELS!
My guess is that it’s something you have achieved….either in the normal game or something like amount of tricks or powerslides you’re acheiving….Nothing definitive though…SORRY!
Mario karts is such a good game im a star wheel but it is ranks i have had it for one day but if you was using the numshack it wuld be a golden numshack or whatever controller
No No No, play in battle mode and if you win the cup (your name at the top), your wheel turns gold, only you not your guest, if you play with other controllers you will not see anything above them, tried with classic controller today. Only if you play with wheel will you see the logo above you.

Also, unlocked a new kart yesterday because i played 50 wfc matches may also be this that turned the wheel gold.
All the other answers i’ve seen here are all wrong, the golden wheel has nothing to do with your rank, you get a golden wheel next to your name if you always play with your wii wheel, never with gamecube controller, nunchuk, etc…
if you want one, just keep playing with your wii wheel
